That's a problem.

Yeah, it'd be very easy to just keep on keepin' on with my life and ignore the fact that I have a family trapped in a cult. In the same vein, I could just walk past a burning building.

After 22 years of shunning, my mother and younger brother reached out to me in the last year without any prompting on my part and with little or no conditions set. They've welcomed me into their homes and broken bread with me. I don't know if that's a signal that they're doubting or that they simply don't much care to shun anymore, but family means something and I'll gladly forgive them for doing something they were brainwashed to do. If I start getting fed the party line again, then I'll know what to do. But for now, I like the idea of putting bitterness aside and giving peace a chance.

Wannaexit - There's no shame to doing something you were brainwashed to do. This cult gives a person enough guilt without heaping more on yourself. I hope you can forgive yourself for your unwitting acquiescence to the GB.

Personally, I didn't actively shun (I was too young) but I remember being very afraid of apostates. Like boogeymen, or that green stuff in the back of my fridge. (Don't ask.) There's a reason they taught fear...nothing is so powerful as the truth.

Probably the only remotely promising study this elder has had in quite a while. Slim pickins these days, especially in the developed world.

One should have no doubts as to whether the JW organization is a cult after reading this excellent narrative. What a screaming case of cognitive dissonance! So sad.

I can only hope that I have this kind of presence of mind if (when) I confront an elder.

Wife and kids are officially OUT!!

my wife has told her jw best friend and jw sister that she is givng up the religion!!

and there was i worrying about losing her when i left the cult.

and, to top it all, my 15 and 13 year old children are using their critical thinking skills and can see it all for what it is.

Mous - at this point I am genuinely interested in their responses and I think an evenhanded, almost dispassionate inquiry will bear more fruit than immediate legal threat.

This is not to say that the elders' (and by extension the WTBTS') decision to cause my family to shun me for over two decades isn't a terrible thing. In reality, winning a legal case for intentional infliction of emotional distress by actively encouraging my family to shun me would be a tough sell in a court. In fact, it might be groundbreaking, because I know of no other similar suit which was brought along those lines much less won.

Anyway, I'll see if I can get some answers first. Plenty of time to try to catch flies with vinegar if the honey doesn't work.

Blondie is correct. Hence my question regarding what terminology they used when they announced their action from the podium.

In any event, whatever they said resulted in 23 years of shunning.

What is "theocratic warfare?" Is this official doctrine of JW's?

i have never heard of "theocratic warfare," until i started reading blogs from, and interacting with ex-jw's online.

are there any articles that mention this practice?

i never once heard of it while we were studying.. now i'm wondering how many times it's been used on me.

My reasoning for sending the letter really isn't about me at all. They can all go hang for all I care. However, my (in) little brother has already admitted that 'mistakes were made' and 'it would be different now'. I'm hoping to use their response, or their failure to respond, to help open his eyes.
